Invite your bot to a Discord server

To add a bot you need an invite link and the Manage Server permission on the target server. On discbot.net the link is ready on the Publish page, with basic permissions. You pick the server, confirm, and the bot shows up in the member list.

How do you invite the bot, step by step?

  1. Connect the bot first

    The link needs your application’s ID: paste the token into the Discord settings page (token guide).

  2. Open the invite link

    On the Publish page (Publier, as the dashboard is in French for now), click the button to invite the bot with basic permissions. Discord’s authorization page opens.

  3. Pick the server

    In the Add to Server list, pick your server. It only shows up if you have Manage Server there.

  4. Review and authorize

    Click Continue, read the requested permissions, then Authorize. Discord may ask for a captcha.

  5. Publish on that server

    Back on the Publish page, pick that server and publish. The choice is fixed at the first publication: use a test server if you are unsure.

Until the bot is published it stays offline in the member list. That is expected.

Which permissions does the basic invite ask for?

Only what a bot needs to talk in a channel:

  • View Channels and Read Message History;
  • Send Messages and Add Reactions;
  • Embed Links, for embeds;
  • Attach Files.

The link also asks for the right to create slash commands on the server. Moderation and role permissions are not included: add them only if your bot uses them, by editing its role in Server Settings, Roles. Avoid Administrator, which grants everything at once.

Each permission is described in Discord’s documentation.

Where should the bot’s role go?

On arrival the bot gets a role with its name. Discord only lets it act on members and roles placed below that role. If your bot gives roles or takes moderation actions, drag its role above them in Server Settings, Roles.

To check that everything is in place, a help command does the job:

You type in discbot.net

Add a /help command that lists the bot’s commands with one sentence each. Only the person who runs it sees the answer.

discbot.netDone. /help lists the bot’s commands.

What I can do

/poll: start a vote with buttons

/warn: warn a member (moderators)

/help: show this list

Example shown in English; you would ask in French for now. If /help answers, the bot is on the right server, published, and allowed to post here.

How do you build the link yourself in the Developer Portal?

Useful if you want other permissions from the start. The portal offers two ways:

  1. OAuth2, then OAuth2 URL Generator

    Tick the bot and applications.commands scopes, then the permissions you want under Bot Permissions. Copy the Generated URL at the bottom.

  2. Or Installation

    In Install Link, choose Discord Provided Link. Under Default Install Settings, Guild Install, add the bot and applications.commands scopes and the permissions. Save and copy the link.

Without the applications.commands scope, slash commands do not show up. The full flow is in the OAuth2 documentation.

You can also prepare this link with the Discord permissions calculator: tick the permissions, paste the application ID and it builds the link in your browser.

What if the invite does not work?

ProblemYour server is not in the list.
FixYou lack Manage Server on that server. Ask the owner for that permission, or to open the link themselves.
ProblemDiscord shows an error about a code grant.
FixRequires OAuth2 Code Grant is on in the Bot tab. Turn it off: the discbot.net invite does not use it.
ProblemThe bot joined but does not answer.
FixIt is not published yet, or it is stopped. Open the Publish page on discbot.net and check its status.
ProblemThe bot does not post in one particular channel.
FixThat channel has its own permissions. Give the bot’s role View Channel and Send Messages in the channel settings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I invite the bot to several servers?

A discbot.net bot is published on one server. For another server, create another bot with its own Discord application.

Edit the bot’s role in Server Settings, Roles. You can also reopen the invite link from the Publish page to update its permissions.

How do I remove the bot from the server?

Right-click the bot in the member list, then Kick. To stop it without removing it, use the stop button in discbot.net.

Free for now. Create your discbot.net account: during the private beta, you invite and publish your bot as soon as your access is approved.
