A role bot for Discord

A role bot lets each member pick their own roles: their games, their pings, their region. One click on a button adds the role, a second click removes it. On discbot.net you describe the panel in one sentence and the assistant writes the buttons, the menu or the reactions.

What does a role panel look like?

You type in discbot.net

Make an admin-only /role-panel command. It posts a message with one button per game: Valorant, Minecraft, Fortnite. A click gives the role with the same name, a second click removes it.

discbot.netDone. /role-panel posts the three role buttons.

Buttons, menu or reactions: which one?

  • Buttons are the clearest: one role per button, up to 25 per message.
  • A dropdown menu suits long lists (up to 25 choices), or picking several roles at once.
  • Reaction roles (clicking an emoji under a message) still work for people used to them. The bot then watches that message’s reactions, with no privileged intent.
  • A /role command with the role as an option suits teams who prefer typing.

To give a role automatically on arrival, see the welcome bot. For a role earned by playing, see the game bot.

Why must the bot sit above the roles it gives?

It is a Discord rule: a bot can only give or remove roles placed below its own role, and only with the Manage Roles permission.

  1. Open the role list

    Server Settings, then Roles.

  2. Move the bot’s role up

Drag the role named after your bot above Valorant, Minecraft and Fortnite. Save.

  3. Add Manage Roles

In the bot role’s permissions, turn on Manage Roles. The basic invite offered by discbot.net does not include it.

Discord’s help center explains the role hierarchy in detail.

What does the bot not do yet?

  • Give an administrator role, or a role managed by Discord or another app (such as the booster role): refused for safety.
  • Create a role with permissions: the bot can create a role with a name and a color, then you set its permissions in Discord.
  • Hand out roles in bulk: past 20 role changes a minute, discbot.net pauses the bot as a safety measure and you confirm the restart on the Publish page.
  • Discord Linked Roles, which check an external account.

Why is the role not given?

ProblemThe click shows a permission error.
FixThe bot’s role is below the role to give, or Manage Roles is missing. Fix the order in Server Settings, Roles.
ProblemThe role is given but the member cannot see the channel.
FixThe channel is not open to that role. In the channel’s permissions, give the role View Channel.
ProblemReaction roles stopped working after you reposted the panel.
FixThe bot still watches the old message. Ask the assistant to follow the new one.

Frequently asked questions

Can the bot create the roles itself?

Yes, with a name, a color and whether it can be mentioned. It creates them without permissions: you then choose what each role can do in Discord.

How many roles per panel?

Up to 25 buttons or 25 menu choices per message, per Discord’s limits. Past that, make one panel per topic.

What about Discord Onboarding?

On Community servers, Discord Onboarding asks questions on arrival and gives roles without a bot. The bot is still useful for changing roles at any time or for your own rules.

Do I have to pay?

No, it is free for now with no credit card. During the private beta, an approved account is needed to build and publish.

Free for now. Create your account and post your role panel as soon as your private beta access is approved.
