Get your Discord bot token

The token is your bot’s password: it lives in the Discord Developer Portal, Bot tab, behind the Reset Token button. Discord shows it only once, so copy it right away. On discbot.net you paste it in the Discord settings page, where the French dashboard calls it the secret key (clé secrète).

Where do you find the token, step by step?

  1. Open the Developer Portal

Go to discord.com/developers/applications and log in with your usual Discord account.

  2. Create an application

Click New Application at the top right. Give it the name your bot will have, accept Discord’s terms and click Create.

  3. Open the Bot tab

In the left menu, click Bot. That page holds the token, Public Bot and the intents.

  4. Generate the token

In the Token section, click Reset Token and confirm. If your account uses two-factor authentication, Discord asks for your code.

  5. Copy it

Click Copy. The token is never shown again: if you close the page first, you will need a new one.

  6. Paste it into discbot.net

In your bot, open Réglages › Discord (the settings page; the dashboard is in French for now), paste the token and click Vérifier et enregistrer (check and save). discbot.net tests it with Discord before keeping it.

Discord covers this step too in its getting started guide.

Do you need a new application for each bot?

Yes, that is the safest choice. One application means one bot and one token. If you reuse the application of a bot that already runs somewhere else, Reset Token cuts that bot off at once, because its token stops working.

On the same Bot tab, leave Public Bot off if you are the only one who will invite your bot. If Discord refuses, first set Install Link to None on the Installation tab.

How do you check the bot is connected?

Once the Discord settings page shows your bot as connected, invite it (invite guide) and publish a tiny command. The classic one:

You type in discbot.net

Make a /ping command that answers Pong with the bot’s latency.

discbot.netDone. /ping is written and checked.

bot-test
Lea

/ping

Club BotAPP

Pong! Latency: 42 ms.

Example shown in English; you would ask in French for now. If /ping answers on your server, the token, the invite and publishing all work.

How do you keep the token safe?

Whoever has the token controls your bot, with all its permissions on your server. Never send it to anyone, and only paste it into the field discbot.net provides.

  • On discbot.net it is kept in an encrypted vault and never shown again.
  • The assistant never sees it, and your bot’s code does not receive it.
  • A security history, visible only to you, is kept for 90 days.

What are the usual mistakes?

Problemdiscbot.net rejects what you pasted.
FixYou probably copied the Client Secret (OAuth2 tab), the Application ID or the Public Key (General Information tab). The token is only on the Bot tab.
ProblemYou cannot find the token any more.
FixThat is expected: Discord shows it once. Click Reset Token again, copy the new one and replace the old one in the Discord settings page. Your server and commands stay in place.
ProblemYou showed the token by mistake (screenshot, message, code repository).
FixClick Reset Token right away: the old one stops working. Then paste the new one into discbot.net.
ProblemAnother bot stopped after Reset Token.
FixIt used the same application. Create a fresh application for discbot.net. To bring the other bot back, generate a new token for its application and paste it at its host.

Frequently asked questions

Are the token, the secret key and the Client Secret the same thing?

The token and the secret key are the same: discbot.net calls the Bot tab token the secret key. The Client Secret on the OAuth2 tab is something else and is not used here.

Do I pay Discord anything?

No. Creating an application and a bot in the Developer Portal is free.

What happens if I delete the key in discbot.net?

discbot.net erases it and can no longer connect your bot, but the key stays valid at Discord. To cancel it for good, click Reset Token in the portal.

Free for now. Create your discbot.net account: during the private beta, you connect your bot as soon as your access is approved.
